About Keystone College Undergraduate Research

What is Undergraduate research?

"Undergraduate research is an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate in collaboration with a faculty mentor that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline" (CUR, 2008).

The term research should be broadly interpreted and defined by the standard practices established within each academic discipline. Regardless of how research is defined, it is assumed that the research will produce original results and contribute to the body of knowledge and creative works within the discipline. This can and does include both scholarship and creative activities.

How do I initiate Undergraduate Research?

Student working with clayThe project can come about in one of two ways:

• Student initiated research with faculty supervision

• Faculty initiated research by involving the student as an individual or member of a team of undergraduate researchers

There are many ways to include a student in undergraduate research. Each of these ways is based on the discipline you are mentoring in.

Arts and Humanities disciplines may require only guidance as the student works on their own individual project.

In the Mathematics and Science disciplines, the involvement will be deeper due to the nature of the scientific experimental process.

In any of the areas, undergraduate research may include participation of the student in an ongoing faculty project. Publication of materials from these projects should include the student's name along with the faculty mentor, except in the case of individual creative work.

Why Do Undergraduate Research?

Our Mission Statement

Keystone College will strive to engage and energize both faculty and students by modeling and mentoring students in the process of discovery and expanding the knowledge and expertise needed in their chosen field through the undergraduate research experience.
