Members of the Keystone community gathered on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 to take part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise awareness to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice.
Keystone Associate Professor Dr. Nancy Merryman’s husband Jim, who is a faculty member at Wilkes University, was recently diagnosed with ALS and the campus community came together to support this cause in his honor. Faculty and staff were doused with ice water by students and they also supported the cause with a $1,000 donation. The group then called upon Wilkes University and Wilkes president Patrick Leahy to complete the challenge.
